Bronze coin

This is a bronze coin from Afghanistan which was made in about the second century B.C. On the front is an Indian goddess and an inscription in Prakrit language and Brahmi script. On the back of the coin is a panther and an inscription in Greek.

The inscriptions in Brahmi and Greek both give the name of King Agathocles who had the coins made. Coins like this with the same inscription in different scripts helped scholars to decipher ancient Indian scripts.
