DK Area and Trench E

In the 1924-25 season, the archaeologist K.N. Dikshit dug a trench about 450 metres long across the area now known as the Lower Town. This trench was called 'Trench E'. Archaeologists dig trenches at new sites to get an overview of the types of structures and objects that might be there. In addition, it allows them to judge how large a site is.

A large number of objects and interesting structures were found in Trench E. Based on the findings from Trench E, archaeologists decided to excavate the area more fully. The area around Trench E became known as DK Area.

The objects shown below represent some of the types of objects found in DK Area and Trench E.
