Animals and Makara

Lions, elephants and other powerful or wild beasts were often shown in stupa reliefs protecting the stupa from evil spirits.

This scene shows lions and a makara. Makaras were mythological crocodile-like creatures with a fish's tail. Sometimes Makaras also had an elephant's trunk.
